Foot straps
Foot straps provide support for your tricks, as well as increased performance when riding and pumping your foil. But you miss out on the free feeling and maximum freedom of movement without straps on your board. For absolute beginners who first need to find their balance, we strongly recommend learning without foot straps, to minimize the risk of injury.
All those who decide to mount foot straps on their wingsurf board can choose between several setups. It is common to fit two front straps or two front and one rear strap, but there are also wingsurfers who only fit one front strap or, more commonly, a single front strap and one rear strap. Many wing surfers only use the front foot strap to get onto the foil faster by pulling the board up and out of the water with their front foot.
Depending on the arrangement of the inserts on your own board, there is the option of fitting a V-strap at the front strap position, where the front foot straps are connected to each other and fixed to the board at a single point in the middle or attaching two individual foot straps in the "traditional" way, as we are used to in windsurfing, for example.
The size of the straps can either be conveniently adjusted with a Velcro fastener or simply by moving the fastening screws at the base of the foot straps. Your straps should be perfectly adjusted, especially when you start your first freestyle moves. You don't want to lose contact with your board unintentionally, but you want to be able to quickly detach yourself from the board if something goes wrong. Especially for jumping, we have had good experiences with adjusting our straps close to the side of the foot, but high enough so that you can anchor your foot optimally.
Leashes:
To keep your wing and board with you even after a crash, you need a wrist leash for your wing and a board leash for your board. The wrist leash can be attached to the wrist and the board leash to the leg, but there is also the option of attaching one or both leashes to a waist belt or harness. A wrist leash is part of the standard equipment of every wingsurfer, a board leash can or should be dispensed with under certain circumstances. Especially for advanced wingsurfers who move in powerful waves or jump (especially overhead rotations), it is often the better choice not to use a board leash due to the risk of injury. With the right technique, it is usually possible to get back to the board without a leash. However, caution is advised, especially in offshore winds.
Leashes are available in different versions. A distinction is made between a classic straight leash, which is often covered in plastic, a coiled leash, which can stretch but is relatively short when unstretched due to its spiral shape, and a bungee leash, which is shorter but stretchable and is sometimes made from a wider, robust webbing material with an elastic core.
A coiled leash is usually a good choice for the board leash. Tastes differ when it comes to the wrist leash. A coiled leash weighs a little more but has handling advantages for some wingsurfers. Depending on the manufacturer, you can also choose your wrist leash in different lengths. This means you can choose a shorter leash for smaller wings and a slightly longer leash for larger wings, which in turn makes handling easier. With a coiled wrist leash, a 4'' long leash has proven very effective for wings under 5m2 and a 5.5" leash for wings over 5m2.
Caution: A wrist leash is a wearing part and should be replaced occasionally. Depending on usage behavior, a guideline would be once a year.
Harness Lines:
Riding with a harness not only takes the strain off your arms and shoulders but can also increase your efficiency, especially when going upwind. There is a wide variety of harness lines available. Lines are available in adjustable lengths and with plastic sheathing, for example, or as an elastic bungee.
