Material selection for windsurfing
The choice of material for windsurfing is very wide nowadays - there are many different types of boards, sails, masts and booms to choose from depending on the conditions and experience of the surfer.
You can find boards in different sizes, which affect stability and handling differently, and the shape also plays a role. Beginners often choose wider and more stable boards, while experienced windsurfers prefer smaller boards that are faster and more maneuverable to surf.
Windsurfing sails also vary in size, from small sails for kids and beginners or strong winds to larger sails for advanced surfers and stronger winds. The appropriate size of sail depends on several factors, such as the weight of the windsurfer, the strength of the wind, and the conditions on the water.
There are also special boards and sails for specific windsurfing disciplines such as freestyle, slalom, freerace or wave riding. Each discipline uses its own gear designed to facilitate certain tricks and maneuvers. Material that is particularly easy to handle and at the same time offers maximum riding fun is called freeride gear.
The mast and boom are also adapted to the particular area of use. Here it is important that these are compatible with the sail. For the mast and mast extension, as well as for the boom front piece, attention must be paid to the distinction between SDM (Standard Diameter Mast) and RDM (Reduced Diameter Mast). Another criterion is the carbon content. Masts with more carbon content (up to 100%) are much lighter and retain their shape well, but are usually more expensive. Booms and mast extensions are also available in the high-quality carbon variety.
Windsurfing is an exciting sport that requires a high level of coordination, endurance and technical know-how. Choosing the right material plays an important role and can have a big impact on the experience on the water.
